My vision for K9 Central has always been to provide a meeting place for like-minded people passionate about dogs.
I want to reach out and spark this passion in as many people as possible because it is through this passion and, yes, empathy towards our four-legged friends that we can make a true difference in this world.
Every dog deserves a chance and a great home. By telling more people how to care for and love their dogs, dogs are less likely to end up in a shelter or be abandoned.
K9 Central is now in its twelfth year of business. Every year, we improve, add, and refine. Change is ongoing. But this year, I am excited about our training program. Why? Our instructors are passionate about teaching people. They want to give you the tools to communicate and have fun with your dog. Isn’t this what it is all about? What is Motivational Training?
Positive motivational means adding something pleasant to increase a behavior. For example, you ask your dog to sit and reward him with his favorite treat or praise. The reward reinforces the preceding response and increases in frequency and the likelihood that the behavior will be repeated in the future. Any behavior that is reinforced, your dog will repeat.
A growing collection of recent studies proves that dogs’ motivational training is much more effective and ultimately successful than training involving dominance and punishment. Some studies even demonstrated that training involving punishment created additional problem behaviors – indeed, an outcome no dog guardian deliberately intended to achieve. Motivational training has been scientifically proven to be the most effective and quickest way to train your dog. You can teach your dog virtually anything using motivational training, from tricks to obedience to solving behavioral issues such as aggression; this training is fun for both, ensuring quicker learning and creating a trusting relationship based on trust and respect. Your puppy will learn good ‘bite inhibition’ (gentle jaws) by socializing with other dogs of different breeds and sizes. Do you have a new dog sport prospect in your family?!? Are you hoping to maximize the spongelike puppy brain and implement the best sport foundation possible? The world of K9 Fitness is an exciting and quickly growing as part of K9 wellness. Whether you are looking to improve your K9 weekend warrior’s ability to keep up on family hikes, active trips to the cottage, or if you are participating in dog sports and want to improve your dog’s strength and endurance and help prevent common injuries, or even if you are just looking to add another element to enrich their daily lives – this course is for you! In this 6 week program you will learn the most fundamental elements of a balance K9 fitness program, and we will explore some of the most important skills and exercises that you can do at home with your dog. Each week we will explore new exercises, and will evaluate your dog’s progress and adapt the exercises so that they can continue to get stronger and fitter!

Continuing to develop a positive working relationship between you and your dog, agility develops confidence and provides stimulation while creating a greater desire to work/play with you. These three levels work together to form one cohesive whole. Dog and handler teams must be proficient at each level before they go to the next level.
Intermediate Agility
At this level we will continue to work on getting the contacts to full height, introduce basic Handling Manoeuvers & Jump Work using Grids. All equipment will be introduced at this level while focusing on building control & speed as the dogs becomes more confident in their skills.
Prerequisite: Beginner Agility & Your dog must be able to focus on you in a distracting environment.

Sport Dog Foundations
This class will provide you with the skills to create a dog who wants to work and play with you using fun games and exercises to build engagement and enthusiasm for work.
Skills we will cover:
- Self-control!! We will teach the dogs that being patient and polite are the two keys to unlocking reinforcement through treats and toys.
- Creating an understanding for boundary work (stay on your mat, or stay in your crate/place etc.) which will become the building blocks for other dog sports (obedience or agility).
- Body awareness. We want our canine athletes to be fully aware of where all their parts are, and how to use them. This will help them be able to get straighter sits and stronger heeling with snappy turns in obedience, and will enable them to run faster, more accurately and much more safely in agility. The dogs who have fitter stronger bodies will also be much more likely to play their favourite games well into their senior years.
- As a direct benefit of the body awareness, there will be a confidence building element to these classes in that the dogs will be required to work on and be comfortable with different platforms, perches and obstacles as an introduction to some of the potential dog sports out there. For example, there will be plank work and perch-work to help build confidence and strength in the dogs.

International Agility Handling and Skills
Handling Skills 1
For teams who want to learn the new handling techniques or teams that want to perfect them. Good for dogs just learning these skills or for those who need more commitment and accuracy. Most skills will be done using 5 jumps to 1-2 tunnels. This class focuses on handling skills – not weave or contacts. Focus on blind crosses, threadles, backsides, wraps, forced fronts and more. Dogs need proficiency on jumps and tunnels only in order to participate.

Proofing Handling Skills (Skills 2):
For teams who are proficient with the European style handling skills. Teams will test their skills on small sequences of jumps and tunnels, using various handling options. This course will help evaluate your teams strengths and weaknesses using fun, challenging small space sequences.

Dogs should be proficient with European handling skills and all pieces of equipment. Each week an International style course will be presented. Flyball: A fast-paced, relay-race team sport.
A flyball course consists of four jumps spaced 10 feet apart. The dog races down the course, picks up a ball and races back. Two teams race simultaneously and the team with their fourth dog back first is the winner. This is a high-energy, very loud event. I don’t know what is louder — the dogs barking excitedly or the teams cheering on their dogs. It’s soooooo much fun.
We offer two levels of flyball and continued coaching. In Level 1, dogs learn the jumps and the flyball box and we teach you some really fun motivational games. Level 2 continues to build on these skills, plus the dogs learn to pass and increase drive! Flyball is taught by K9 Central owner/manger, Morgan Jarvis. She is an experienced flyball competitor with over 18 years of experience. Morgan currently races on one of Ontario’s top ranked regular and multi-breed teams — On the Fly. Group Sit/Down Stays
Dock diving, or dock jumping as it is also known, is a fun new sport in which dogs compete in jumping for distance or height from a dock into a pool or body of water. The sport first appeared in 1997 and has since grown exponentially in popularity. A number of organizations run dock jumping competitions including DockDogs and Splash Dogs.
K9 Central’s dock jumping trainers are intent on getting you in the game. We will introduce your dog to the dock, help you to build focus and drive, and work on increasing your dog’s strength and lift. Before you know it, you too will catch the dock jumping fever!
In this fun course you will learn shoreline training, jumping and catching, rear end awareness, and how to build toy drive, all skills used to build successful dock diving techniques. You and your dog will become familiar with the pool and dock by playing motivational games. Small progressions using the “place and send” method which is used to build the confidence in your dog to jump. If you are already have dock competition experience we will work with you and your dog at their current level.

Our Board and Train program is an intensive program where your dog will work on basic skills and commands to help them become better everyday companions. We also offer Board and Train for resource guarding and reactivity. Board and Train includes plenty of enrichment, daily training sessions, and lots of daily socialization with staff and other dogs (if your dog is social). While working on your training goals, we will provide a stimulating, fun environment for dogs to play, socialize, and learn new skills.
